Emergency Action COVID-19

AMAGGI provides food to 150,000 socially vulnerable families

With the socio-economic crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil persisting, AMAGGI is allocating BRL 11 million to purchase non-perishable foods to help families in social vulnerability in the states of Mato Grosso, Amazonas and Rondônia. This new Emergency Action is being implemented by the André and Lucia Maggi Foundation, responsible for AMAGGI’s Private Social Investment and which has been coordinating the delivery of circa 150,000 basic food baskets in 18 municipalities. It started in May, and the Emergency Action will last until December.

“Last year, right after the beginning of the pandemic and the social crisis it generated, AMAGGI and the André and Lucia Maggi Foundation started various initiatives – such as donations of hospital equipment and food – which totaled circa BRL 6 million in social investment to families in vulnerable situations. In 2021, the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic unfortunately persist, with many families without access to food at a time of such hardship. That is why we are back in action, investing another BRL 11 million for the food security of around 500,000 people in Mato Grosso, Amazonas and Rondônia”, explains AMAGGI’s CEO, Judiney Carvalho.

The municipalities covered by the Emergency Action were selected based on socio-economic studies and research, such as the Municipal Human Development (IDHM), Municipal Vulnerability (IVM) and Poverty and Extreme Poverty indexes presented in the Federal Government’s CadÚnico. The selection also considered indicators related to the COVID-19 pandemic in locations where AMAGGI operates.

How it works

Acquired by AMAGGI, the food is distributed in the states of Mato Grosso, Rondônia and Amazonas with the help from partners to more than 200 social organizations, chosen according to the service profile of the population living in poverty and extreme poverty in the selected municipalities. These organizations will continue until December, effectively delivering food baskets directly to families identified in a situation of social vulnerability and registered in the CadÚnico in their localities.

With the Foundation’s operations, based on social indicators, the Emergency Action reaches a high level of effectiveness, as it manages to reach exactly the most socially vulnerable families in municipalities with the most worrying scenarios with regards to the health, according to indicators.
